FAQ
- Thin clients cost the same or are only slightly cheaper than PCs. How can desktop virtualization cut my costs?
Client costs are a small part of the equation and it may take several years to see reductions in capital expenditures. The most important cost savings will be found with operational expenses, and these will typically be seen immediately.
- Do thin clients really use less power than a desktop?
Yes. On average while at full power the average PC and monitor use nearly 150 watts of power. Even in hibernate mode they use 4 watts. Our thin client device uses only 8.4 watts.
- Will I have to replace all of my desktops with thin clients?
No. In fact, since the clients in our architecture are used only to paint the images presented by the cloud, even a very low powered desktop can be attached to the Nuvolus cloud. Replacing desktops with thin clients will ultimately result in a reduction in capital expenditures, but operational costs can be reduced immediately.
- Will desktop virtualization solve my virus and security problems?
Not entirely. Unhealthy desktop practices can be implemented in a virtual desktop environment. Ensuring good security practices and limiting users abilities to install their own applications will help with limiting security problems. However, the fact that desktops are managed in a central location can make it easier to detect and correct security issues.
